The Duck Who Was Afraid of The Water – A Story of Courage and Kindness

The Duck Who Was Afraid of The Water was born from the many stories and real-life moments I’ve encountered throughout my career as a children’s and general nurse here in rural Norfolk. I’ve spent years caring for children and families, and through those interactions, I noticed a common thread—how powerful encouragement, patience, and support can be in helping little ones face their fears.

In the book, Dilly is a duckling who’s afraid to go into the water—a bit unusual for a duck, of course! But just like many children who might be nervous about trying something new, Dilly needs a bit of gentle reassurance. When an unexpected pond creature lends a helping hand (or flipper), Dilly finds the courage to dive into a whole new world.

This story isn’t just about swimmingit’s about trust, friendship, and the bravery that grows when we feel supported. My hope is that The Duck Who Was Afraid of The Water becomes a book that children, parents, and carers can enjoy together—sparking conversations, building confidence, and maybe even making a few giggles along the way.

Thank you to the local paper for sharing our little duck’s journey. I’m grateful to continue my work in nursing, and even more so to now walk alongside young readers and their families through storytelling.
